What makes Hays County septic its own discipline

If you are on an aerobic system, Texas requires a maintenance contract — and a report to the county every four months.

Thin soil over limestone means most of the western county runs an aerobic unit rather than a conventional field. That is a standing obligation, not a five-year pumping cycle, and a lapsed contract is the most common compliance failure here.

Cross-section of a hillside lot in clay: effluent leaves the tank into a drain field cut into slow-draining red clay, where water moves sideways along the slope rather than down.
In clay, water leaves the trench sideways rather than down. On a slope that means it surfaces downhill.

Why here is different

A drain field is a soil machine. Out here there is often no soil to run it.

West of I-35 the cover over Edwards and Glen Rose limestone can be a few inches. Fractured rock is the wrong medium twice over: it will not hold effluent long enough to treat it, and it moves water in directions nobody can model.

That is why so much of this county runs an aerobic unit with spray or drip disposal — and why a site evaluation decides the design before anyone quotes a price. East of the corridor the problem inverts: heavy clay that drowns a field in a wet spring.
